This week, Iowa Safe Routes to School partnered with Iowa State University Extension to conduct a walk audit in the vibrant community of West Liberty. Joined by an enthusiastic group of volunteers, city staff, the mayor, and even the mayor’s granddaughter, the team explored how walking and biking can be made even safer and more accessible in this already walkable town.
The group walked two thoughtfully selected routes. One led to West Liberty Foods, a major employer in the area, helping examine how people can safely commute to work by foot or bike. The second route connected key community destinations—including the local schools and a park—giving insight into how students and families navigate their daily travels.
During the walk audit, participants took photos and detailed notes on both the strengths and areas for improvement along the routes. They documented well-maintained sidewalks, shaded walkways, and clear signage, while also identifying opportunities such as faded crosswalks, missing curb ramps, and overgrown vegetation. These observations will help guide future improvements to make walking and biking even more accessible and enjoyable for all residents.
This collaborative event showcased how community engagement and thoughtful planning can help make West Liberty an even more inviting place for walking, biking, and healthy living. Iowa Safe Routes to School is proud to support these local efforts and looks forward to seeing the positive changes to come.
Iowa Safe Routes to School is funded through a matching grant, help us raise our 20% of the grant right here to continue our efforts to expand active transportation opportunities across the state. Thank you.
