The Back to School Bash at Audubon Elementary in Dubuque was a big success this past Saturday, welcoming families from across the community for an afternoon of fun, resources, and safety. Among the many engaging activities, including an exciting bike rodeo hosted by the City of Dubuque and the Dubuque Bike COOP in partnership with the Iowa Bicycle Coalition and Iowa Safe Routes to School.

Kids had the chance to ride through a fun, skill-building bike rodeo course where they practiced starting and stopping, hand signals, scanning for traffic, and navigating turns—all while learning the rules of the road in a safe and supportive environment. It was a perfect opportunity to build confidence on two wheels just in time for the start of the school year.

In addition to the hands-on learning, families received free bike safety gear. Thanks to our local partners, over 50 helmets and sets of bike lights were given away to help ensure students are safe and seen as they ride around the neighborhood or to and from school.

Events like the Back to School Bash are a great way to bring communities together around safety, active transportation, and healthy habits. Iowa Safe Routes to School is proud to support efforts that get more kids walking and biking while giving them the tools and education they need to do so safely.

We’re grateful to the Dubuque Community School District, Audubon Elementary, the City of Dubuque, and the Dubuque Bike COOP for their collaboration—and we’re excited to see so many young riders ready to roll into the school year!

Iowa Safe Routes to School is funded through a matching grant, help us raise our 20% of the grant right here to continue our efforts to expand active transportation opportunities across the state. Thank you.
