Today is officially the first day of summer, and I’m sure, we are all looking forward to enjoying some warm sunny days in the outdoors. Iowa has some of the most picturesque trails, parks, and communities in the US. (Right: Trout Run Trail Decorah)
Iowa Safe Routes to School has had a very busy and productive spring. We have organized, participated, and provided support for over 40 bicycle rodeos. During the last part of the school year we provided assemblies, classroom instruction, and Walking School Bus support where we came into contact with just over 3,000 students.
Over the next few weeks we will begin the process of re-applying for our grant funds. Iowa Safe Routes to School is funded by a grant afforded to us by the Iowa Department of Transportation, and is a division of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. Our grant funding is a partnership comprised of the Iowa planning regions of INRCOG, UERPC, and the IBC.
This summer we are adding a new aspect to our portfolio. Bike Camp. Bike Camp will take place at two different YMCA locations Marshalltown, and Muscatine. Bike Camp will teach kids many aspects of safe biking. We cover route planning, maintenance, traffic safety, helmet fitting and much more.
Bike safety tips for summer fun:
- WEAR A HELMET
- Ride Right with the flow of traffic
- Obey all traffic laws
- Be Predictable
- Stay alert, no headphones
